It’s tough when your work is unloved but the artists rejected from this year’s BP Portrait Award show that even though they may be down, they’re not out, by staging their own Salon Des Refusés exhibition. Paintings will for sale on opening night from the exhibition of a total of 55 refused artists.– the same number as can be found in the BP exhibition.Entries have been sent from Chelmsford, Cambridge, Birmingam, Margate and Mexico...

Victoria Road.......

Victoria Road are a new venture to Walthamstow, introducing upcylced vintage pieces creating unique and eclectic pieces for your home. Set up by 2 young artists who are looking to promote other artists in the area, we thought we'd repay the favour to show you some of their great work and give them the chance to tell you a little about themselves..........

Take Victoria Road and recycle history!

Victoria Road isn't only a place in Walthamstow.
It's also a design concept by two young artists living in the area.

The couple creates a quirky range of homeware, the most striking fusion of tradition and tomorrow. Their handmade Eco- products echo the beauty of vintage pieces.
Some of the pieces are interpretations of great designs from the past. Others were removed from their original context to serve a different purpose and earn their new place in the contemporary setting. Both styles could add timeless glamour to classic or modern interiors.

Victoria Road is recycling and up-cycling your way from the past into the future. The materials are reused and so is the design. All the products are created by reusing a design concept from the past. Each item is unique and threads the added dimensions of your memories in.

As a small business that relies on skilled handcraft, customization is Victoria Road's strength. Bespoke designs and unique commissions are their favourite challenge.

Just think of your loft! How many lovely pieces could be waiting to be transformed into something that you can actually use? Something truly unique that would make a great gift or you could impress your guests with.

Christmas events.....

There are many local designers offering up their handcrafted talent just for you this coming week end. Here are just a few of them to help you with your Christmas shopping.....



At the 'Craft Fair' in Walthamstow they are offering a unique auction of a beautiful limited edition print of Lloyd Park by renowned local Royal College of Art Masters artist DAVID SULLIVAN, who is showcasing his new works at the fair.

All proceeds from the fair will go to the sick babies at Homerton University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, who do an absolutely amazing job of looking after extremely sick babies in Hackney and from the whole of London and the surrounding areas.


This one is a bit further afield in Sloane Square which means you'll see a different array of hand crafted items....


For all those art lovers there will be a mini Christmas art trail with the Inky Cuttlefish Studios and The Blackhorse Lane Artists....




and a little fun to relieve the stress of all that Christmas shopping.....

Inspired by William Morris....

Several of the E17 Designers have made it into a great new exhibition at the William Morris gallery. 50 artists, which include Kirsten Schmidt, Anna Alcock, Stephen Kenny, Anja Jane and Sharon Church, have taken inspiration from the legendary William Morris from textile artists, ceramics and even film makers. So pop along and see how the artistic legacy of Morris still lives on through modern contemporary artists today, running until Christmas.

The gallery have installed exhibits dotted throughout the building. In the hope that by hanging some of the works in the permanent galleries as well as the special exhibition space visitors will be inspired by relationships between 'old' and 'new'.

Anja Jane has created a beautiful woodcut style limited edition two-colour screenprint as part of the William Morris Series.

It would make a perfect personalised gift as a handmade screen-printed limited edition of 30.

Anna Alcock and Kirsten Schmidt from Inky Cuttlefish have created this great relief and screen print onto fabric and paper, titled 'Forest Guardians'
Size: Diptych: 118cm x 72cm (each framed size) that makes 118 x 144cm when pieces hang next to each other.

Artist’s statement: How is your work inspired by William Morris?
Inspired by the quote 'Fellowship is life' , we set out to create a work that reflects the ethos of the arts and crafts movement and more specifically was inspired by William Morris, his life, work and writings. Working together we decided each to do a symbolic self-portrait with the title Forest Guardians. We have each brought our individual histories to this piece, with a specific focus on protection and nature. William Morris was inspired by a wide variety of cultures and decorative art, and as international artists born in another country we have brought this element to our pieces.

The decorative elements were key to making Forest Guardians autonomous, and we wanted to make ensure we were loyal to William Morris and his use of nature in repeat patterns, which we did with the border. We printed on fabric and used traditional relief printing techniques in homage to William Morris & Co.

William Morris was influenced and used a medieval style of decoration and flat simplified natural motifs – we used this as our foundation from which to work. Kirsten’s figure is inspired by a medieval German sculpture of a woman holding a lamb, and her border and dress are inspired by the medieval style of decoration.



Sharon Church has a great textile piece that includes many modern techniques such as hand machine embroidery and burnishing. To learn more about Sharon from i am inspired check out her website.

Wanstead Art Trail....

The Wanstead Art Trail puts Wanstead on the map

19th September - 26th September 2010

Bring along your family and friends to the first Wanstead Art Trail, and enjoy one of the neighbourhood’s biggest free events. The trail – supported by The Wanstead Society community group – begins on Sunday 19th September, the same day as the Wanstead Festival, to help create an exciting buzz in the area. Shops, businesses, pubs and community centres in and around Wanstead High Street will be displaying work by over 130 local artists, from professionals to enthusiastic amateurs. A variety of work - painting, sculpture, photography, mosaic, textiles, stained glass and more - will also be displayed at Wanstead Golf Club, The Temple in Wanstead Park and Wanstead House Community Centre. Local schoolchildren will also be participating, with displays at Wanstead Library and Christ Church. All the venues are within walking distance of each other.

Free trail maps will be available from about 65 participating venues, including high street shops and local libraries.

Leytonstone Arts Trail 2010......

It was another great turn out as the E17 Designers hosted another market as part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail. It was a lovely day and many people were meandering through Leytonstone checking out all of the art and design events on show, stopping off en route through the library to support and pick up a few great handmade pieces.

Introducing some of the Designers... Sarah Hardy

Sarah Hardy is a local artist based in Walthamstow and was a new addition to the E17 Designers, at their Spring Fair. Her eclectic drawings of insects are amazingly detailed to minute and accurate precision. Lets hope to see more of her at future markets.

This week we're introducing Inky Cuttlefish, artistic duo Anna and Kirsten who specialise in print making. If you're a local around Walthamstow you've probably already heard of them or even taken one of their classes at their studios on the Blackhorse Road. For those of you who haven't, we recommend their classes as a great way to introduce yourself to printmaking.
